How Amagi gave its senior engineers their time back
AI coding tools multiplied the code Amagi’s engineers wrote, and the review load landed on its most senior people. Codity now carries that first pass on every pull request.
How Codity helped
- DailyCodity is part of every engineer’s everyday workflow
- Earlierlogic bugs and security risks caught before they ship
- Less noisethan the other review tools Amagi tried
If I have to summarize it in one line, Codity helps us move faster without losing confidence in what we ship.
Meet Amagi
Media infrastructure, built at scale
Amagi builds media infrastructure at scale. Its engineering organisation ships the software that broadcasters and streaming platforms run on, so the bar for what reaches production is high.
Rohit Sharma is an engineering manager there, responsible for the teams writing that software and for how their work gets reviewed.
The problem
More code, the same reviewers
As Amagi’s engineers adopted AI coding tools, the amount of code being written rose sharply. Every line of it still needed a review, and most of that review fell on the same small group: the senior engineers.
- 01Code volume grew significantly once AI coding tools were in everyday use.
- 02Senior engineers were spending their time checking for logic bugs, security risks and overall code quality.
- 03Other AI review tools Amagi tried produced too much noise and too many false positives to trust.
As our software engineers started using AI coding tools, we saw the amount of code being generated increase significantly, which means a lot of code to be reviewed. And a lot of that review was falling on our senior engineers.
The solution
A reviewer that knows the codebase
Amagi brought Codity into its pull request workflow. What set it apart from the tools they had tried was context: Codity reads each change against the codebase it lands in, and reviews it from several angles at once rather than one.
- 01Every pull request is reviewed with an understanding of the wider codebase, not just the diff.
- 02Each change is looked at from multiple perspectives: logic, security and code quality.
- 03Findings are specific enough that engineers act on them instead of dismissing them.
What we like about Codity is that it understands our codebase deeply and reviews it from multiple perspectives. We tried other tools as well, but they generated too much noise and too many false positives.
The results
Issues earlier, seniors back on hard problems
Codity is now part of Amagi’s engineers’ everyday workflow. Issues surface on the pull request instead of later, developers move faster, and the senior engineers who used to carry the review load spend that time on architecture and core engineering instead.
- 01Issues are caught earlier in the cycle.
- 02Developers are moving faster.
- 03Senior engineers spend more time on architectural and core engineering problems, and less on reviews.
The impact for us is clear. We are catching issues earlier, developers are moving faster, and our senior engineers are spending more time on architectural and core engineering problems instead of spending time in code reviews.
Takeaway
When AI tools multiply the code a team writes, review becomes the bottleneck. Amagi moved the first pass to Codity and put its senior engineers back on the work only they can do.
